Attention Owners of 1041 W. Berwyn - Your Real Estate Agent's Sales Tactics are Moronic

(Psst, Tod Pratt of yourhomeinchicago.com, I'm talking to you.)

While checking the rss feed from EveryBlock.com I saw a listing for a townhouse a couple blocks away from my condo. Figured I'd check it out to see what is justifying a $459,900 price tag in this neighborhood.

Tod Pratt, yourhomeinchicago.com making me register to see pictures of a townhouse he's marketing - really?

The main photo is pretty generic, so I try to click on the "Extra Photos" link (maybe that should have been my clue, the word "extra" rather than "more"), and I get hit with a "Be My Guest" registration pop-up, saying "Registering as our guest allows you to access special features for this and all other properties."

Really? You're asking me to register before I can see pictures of the townhouse you're trying to sell. In this real estate climate? Really? Good luck with that.

  1. Hey Art,

This is Tod, the moronic realtor you mention.

Sorry you were not able to view the photos of the property on Berwyn. The property is sold, so I guess this moron does know what he is doing.

Sorry for your anger. (my site only asks for an email address from people viewing...it does not even have to be a valid email!!)

All said, if you are looking for a property in Edgewater, and could use some help, let me know...I have been doing this for a long time, and know the neighborhoods very well.

    Be well,
    Tod

  2. Tod -

Thanks for stopping by. This seems a little unnecessary given the self-congratulatory tone of your comment, but congratulations on your big sale, Kahuna of Edgewater Real Estate. However, I'd still caution you not to confuse coincidence with a causal relationship - putting up barriers between your prospects and information they want is not smart. It limits your potential by an order of magnitude - at least. You may have a contract on 1041 W. Berwyn, but the odds are against you if you stick to this approach.

Also, some points of clarification in case you have any appreciation for accuracy and nuance. I did not call you a moron, I said you are using moronic sales tactics. There is a difference. And I do not have "anger" about this. I'm just stunned by how your approach runs completely (and apparently, arrogantly) counter to the growing cultural trend towards openness, where enlightened businesses work to streamline their customers' experiences, making it as easy as possible to extract value from every contact.
